The Adirondack Community-based Trails & Lodging effort has made considerable progress this past year.
  • We reached out to stakeholders throughout the Park and initiated partnerships that will move the trails and lodging effort forward.
  • We compiled a report titled “A Conceptual Plan for a Hut-to-Hut Destination-based Trail System for the Five Towns of Long Lake, Newcomb, Indian Lake, Minerva, and North Hudson” which recommends 26 possible hut-to-hut routes within the Five Towns and should be made public soon.
  • We partnered with the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry on their Great South Woods project and assisted in the design and facilitation of their public meetings.
Now we are ready to take another big step, and we need YOUR help. We are partnering with Dr. Nina Schoch of Biodiversity Research Institute’s (BRI’s)Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation to raise $35,000 in startup support for a new Adirondack Loon and Trails Center opening in early July in Saranac Lake. The Center will house an innovative environmental/outdoor education information center. You can donate HERE.
The Adirondack Loon and Trails Center will be a vital hub for:
  1. Sharing information about our exciting new Adirondack ecotourism initiative to establish a hut-to-hut trail and paddle network linking communities throughout the Park;
  2. Serving as the Park’s primary resource for loon conservation, science, and outreach;
  3. Informing Adirondack residents and visitors about the natural and cultural resources of the Park
Our current ACTLS office in Saranac Lake is in theTousley Storage Building. Many of you who have stopped by our office this past year know what a neat place it is.  We will be moving our offices upstairs in the same building and turning the downstairs into our environmental/outdoor education information center. We are collaborating with Tousley Properties, LLC, (Bill and Mike Madden of Saranac Lake) to help renovate and increase the energy efficiency of this historic Building. This distinctive structure was built in 1924, and is deeply rooted in the Village’s history.
We are asking you to become a Founding Donor of the new Center HERE and help support the work of Leading E.D.G.E’s Adirondack Community-based Trails and Lodging System and BRI’s Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation. Our CrowdRise campaign will raise much-needed funding for interactive and innovative exhibits in the Center’s environmental/outdoor education space; equipment and furniture for staff offices; and displays.
Donations of any size are most welcome. Please also share our work on your favorite social media outlets - like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, which will greatly increase our chances for support. Social media sharing is an extremely important part of our efforts.
